SOMA 20 YEARS [1991 2011] Since 2004 Mark Henning has been releasing music on a variety of labels including Soma, Clink, Cityfox and Frankie, fuelled by the acclaim of his debut album, Jupiter Jive (2008, Soma). Recent releases such as the stomping Cupcakes has cemented his place as one of the electronic music scenes most creative talents. For this release Mark collaborates with Den, a Soma first, having previously worked together on the track such as La Galaxia Llorona on Trapez in 2010. Typically blurring the lines between house and techno, Cosmic Marmalade opens with a energetic and relentless percussive attack, and a deep, aggressive, bass groove on top of which spectral synth stabs weave together. Second track Sin City sees the pair reigned in, a more restrained antidote to the anarchic opener, while still retaining the deep bass funk. Further tracks Canis Major and Driving Andromeda leave none of the offbeat production behind, with the undulating tom patterns and crunchy snares providing a backdrop for further effect laden stabs and swirling arpeggiated synth lines. Cosmic Marmalade showcases two of the scenes brightest, pushing boundaries and challenging the audience with a twisted and bombastic sound.
