Rennie Foster has been a well respected figure in the Canadian music and art community since he was just a teenager. After visiting Japan several times to play, Rennie fell in love with the techno oriented Tokyo club scene and has since relocated to Tokyo where he now lives. With singles on labels such as Subject-Detroit, Monoid, Synewave, Soiree, F Communications etc. and his own imprints Futago Traxx and Dirty Works, his sound fuses the refined minimal elements of modern club sounds with the vibe of filthy Chicago House, classic Detroit Techno and early rave records. Recently he has been also voted by Loud Magazine in the Top50 djs of the Japan dance electronic music scene. Currently ranked at #22! Devils Water, released in 2008 on Rebirth is an incredible piece of modern underground electronic music. Djs like Sasha, James Holden, James Zabiela, Pete Tong, Laurent Garnier, Ben Watt, Trentemoller, Agoria played it in all their sets, and considered it as one of the tunes of the year ! It became a true underground anthem and fueled the inspiration of creating the full length album "Blood Sugar". Blood Sugar is about the balance of sweetness and innocence (sugar) with darkness, depth and melancholy (Blood). This correlation can be also found in Rennies music where the darker vision of his sound lives with the sweeter side ! It contains the essence of Japanese inspired beauty while maintaining the grit and mentality of the Detroit/Chicago sound. Timeless production with collaborations from artists like Aaron-Carl (one of Detroits most enduring and soulful artists), Moka Only (ex Swollen Members, a pioneer and driving force behind Canadian West Coast hip hop) and unidentified soft female vocals, subtle, spooky, balanced with references to classic dance music. Blood Sugar is known to effect the mood of a person and this album reflects that with abstract references and suggestions, both in the song titles, melodies and sound pallette, to the human body's mysterious relationship to different emotional states. The album also includes jacket photography by Rennie's close Tokyo cohort, Hiroshi Watanabe aka Kaito, known for his stellar releases on Kompakt. The opening track Invoke is a perfect warm up deep number with piano, vox and percussions recorded live and set against a powerful background of modern dub techno. Truly psycadelic, the other-worldly vocals create a gothic atmosphere both menacing and inviting. Dark temptation. Demons Muse follows the idea of Devils Water working a mysterious haunting and sultry female vocal with Rennies trademark hypnotic, melancholy feel. Elements of classical music and gothic tinged ambient contrast with sharp, detailed and futuristic drum programming. About Savior featuring Aaron-Carl Rennie says The way the music is very far down in the mix is on purpose..its a kind of effect i was experimenting with and i really love that. also the way the layered distorted effects are in the breakdown is on purpose.. really intense. I am often trying many things in my tracks that are not sounding "normal" but you have to listen to them with an open mind. I really like contrast of very quiet and very loud and the effect of layering in this way. Sometimes i feel dance music is too compressed and balanced and everything has the same volume... Also there isnt any bassline..its weird..but i like it. The music effect is cool to me because its so quiet but still somehow easy to hear everything.. its down in the mix, and it makes the vocal very clear. I like the negative space between the music and vocal. Your Eyes (better known as Tidepools) is an anthemic, ecstatic, emotional, crazy hands in the air feel good track already tested by Pete Tong on BBC Radio1. Skeleton Keys and Vital Organ are both dubby atmospheric tracks, the first deeper and the second with a more techy edge: raw house beats and vocal repetitions that even remind us of some old Chicago Jack trax and classic moments in the "warehouse days" of dance music. Afrocentrik builds with an afro chant on an organic, deep and again hypnotic jam with unexpected changes and abstract elements. With Connect like Four Rennie Foster mixes both hip-hop and house music with style, giving the Moka Only vocals a tasty and cool vibe. Jazzy elements remind of house music's golden age set against sharp, modern production and effects. Rennie's twin daughters make a guest appearance in Work It Daddy!. The music starts with a fresh and visual approach. This is Rennie Foster, able to astonish us with his originality and gutsy approach to music creation. Roughshod , previously released as a b-side to Devil's Water is a spectacular meeting of old school vibe and the new electronic underground sound, a journey with far-out jazzy keys and spacey, emotional strings. A Commitment to Transit is a huge melancholic track with soaring melodic progressions and a folky, epic feel that closes the album poetically.
