EP COMMENTS As 2008 draws to a close, Dan Ghenacia’s Freak n’Chic label shows no sign of letting up its stream of superb output with the superb ‘Bento Box” EP from David K. In the past 5 years David Kemoun has won an army of fans via releases for Cocoon, Supplement Facts, Tsuba and Freak n’Chic. With a broad palette of influences he creates house music in which organic meets electronic like a match made in heaven. This two-volume split EP is his first full solo EP since the universally applauded “Boul De Nerf” on Freak n’Chic in 2007 and is arguably his finest work yet. ‘Bento Box Vol. I’ comprises two slow burning, heady tracks in the form of ‘Yakiniku’ and ‘Yakitori’. The former combines a massive, shifting soundscape with earthy, near-tribal drums and vocal effects before giving way to a plucked bassline which oozes funk. Its counterpart ‘Yakitori’ picks up the funk button and runs, but this time with a dryer groove and sublime warm, rhythmic chords. ‘Bento Box Vol. II’ sees David explore the meaty side of his personality with ‘Fugu’ and ‘Kobe’. Both slightly warped and heavier than ‘Vol. 1’, these techno-tinged monsters are sure fire late-night ammo. Whether it’s the pulsing resonant bassline of ‘Fugu’ or the urgent feel and slightly discordant melodies of ‘Kobe’, these tracks round of a double EP of incredible quality. Support coming from.. Stacey Pullen, Nick Curly, Seth Troxler, Shaun Reeves, Brothers’ Vibe, Steve Lawler, Ripperton, Dario Zenker, Marco Ressman, Dorian Paic, Dave Ellesmere, Adam Beyer, Laurent Garnier, Clive Henry, Danny Tenaglia, Gilb’r, Lee Jones, Tim Xavier, Sebbo Andrew Grant, Agnès, Anthony Collins, Shonky, Dyed Soundorom, Tom Clark, Eurokai, Miss Jools, Xpansul, Tommy four seven, Llorca..
