MalLabel Music is on fire, this time celebrating the EP release of duo Self Fish, a collaboration of Russian natives Nikolay Denisov and Daria Mutovkina. 9th Floor, features three tracks that fuse trip-hop, down-tempo and experimental into three melodic masterpieces to which you can groove. Each track is gritty and raw, with a hauntingly beautiful ethereal quality that’s clearly sensual. Self Fish’s tracks take on an otherworldly aspect, telling a story through the rolling bass and moody undertones. The somewhat languid but building bass, combined with the sweet, hypnotizing vocals are what make the title track, 9th Floor. The darkly stimulating dub groove, soulful melody and gritty sound are hauntingly beautiful, worked together in a chill, yet funky manner. Exceptionality is a lighthearted song that suits its’ name. It has enchanting vocals from Daria Mutovkina, a laidback vibe and swelling orchestral arrangements, all layered together in a seductive manner. This slower, psychedelic track embodies the qualities found in trip hop beats, keeping with down-tempo attitude. With the third and final track, Your World, gives you what you want. The drum crescendo doesn’t overpower the track, rising and falling at the appropriate times, allowing the beat to remain mellow. Self Fish showcases their range and ability to keep their music on the lighter side.
