Hummingbird is the new label from Swiss/British/Australian Edgar Jack aka Benjamin Zulauf and its debut 12 comes from German dj/promoter Simon Li and is nicely bolstered with remixes from Akufen and Violett. Established to simply release quality underground music that touches its aandr, regardless of whether its house, techno or electronica, Hummingbirds first release is a five-track treat for fans of left leaning house. Opening the 50-80 EP is Hong Kong, a smooth house ride characterised by a nagging piano chord and vocal sample combo. From fluid, rolling groove to intense crescendo and back, Hong Kong is a hypnotic but simple cut which indulges the producers love of traditional deep house with a modern lean. Things take an immediate twist with Akufens remix of Hong Kong - a heavily funk-laced piece of phasing disco which sees the Perlon/Musique Risquee legend exercise some serious Moog-infused enthusiasm. The rumbling vibes of Dead For Life follows and in its original, choppy form is a tapestry of warm keys and occasional oddball samples while Argentinian Violett provides two remixes (vocal and instrumental) of forward thinking, break driven house. Born and raised in Lake Constance, Simon Li came to local prominence as a promoter and dj in the techno-wastelands between Zurich and Stuttgart but remixes for Reboot, Dan Berkson and James What and Patrick Zigon have opened him up beyond his homeland. Akufen, aka Marc Leclair pioneered the explosion of micro-house with his brutal yet beautiful use of sampling a decade ago and has gone on to create art installations, his label Musique Risquee and genuinely innovative productions for Perlon, Force Inc and more. Violeta Torres aka Violett is one of South Americas finest DJs. Signed to the illustrious Harry Klein booking agency and having released her take on house and techno on Telegraph, Unfoundsound, Einmaleins and Lo Mid High has become a must check artist amongst those in the know.
