Berlin-based Parisian Olivier Ducreux (aka Shonky) studied mathematics for years before devoting his life to producing and DJing, and it shows. Shonky's tracks are exacting, geometric tech-house anthemsreleased on Freak n Chic, Contexterrior, and Crosstown Rebels, among other labelsa nd were proud to offer the dynamic producers "KorgM1" on Spectral Sound. Shuffling rhythmic themes with maniacal efficiency, Shonky's "KorgM1" is a sleek, spartan track that belies the producers twin obsessions of mathematical order and devilish robo-funk. "KorgM1"'s pacing is meticulous, adding and subtracting elements in decisive intervals that repeatedly raise the stakesa cowbell here, a measure of handclaps there, an ethereal melody here, a pillow-talking bassline there. By the end, Shonky's well-oiled machine does good by its namesake synthesizer, taking the listener to parts unknown and doing so in style.
